The summit will feature experts from Manex, Moss-Adams LLP and the UCLA Anderson School of Management. Curt Johnston, economic development division manager with the City of Fairfield, said the summit will provide “…companies with planning (strategies) that will allow them to emerge stronger as the recession ends.” Both Solano EDC and the City of Fairfield are co-sponsoring the event. Did you know?

Q: What vegetable is grown, in the dark no less, in Rio Vista and nowhere else in the U.S.?

A: Endive lettuce is grown in complete darkness at California Vegetable Specialties the only endive facility in the country.

California Vegetable Specialties is a specialty farming company dedicated to the consistent production of highest-quality California Endive. With growing fields throughout Northern California, the company is headquartered in the town of Rio Vista, in the historically rich agricultural region of the Sacramento River Delta, producing white and red endive, as well as several specialty products for chefs, Endigia and Pissenlit.

Richard Collins, a Sacramento native and graduate of the Agricultural and Managerial Economics program at the University of California, Davis, founded the company in 1983 as Rebel Farms. He chose the name in response to the many naysayers who deemed him foolish for trying to grow endive for the U.S. market. Today, California Vegetable Specialties is the only U.S. producer of endive, and dominates the market west of the Mississippi, selling nearly 4 million pounds of endive each year.

Transportation issues discussed at Economic Development event

The current and future outlook for transportation improvements in Solano County will be updated April 23 in Fairfield. The event is held by the Solano Economic Development Corporation and will feature local transportation officials.

Daryl Halls, executive director of Solano Transportation Authority (STA), County Supervisor Jim Spering, chair of the STA; and Michael Ammann, Solano EDC president, will serve on the panel.

Ammann said the transportation needs of Solano County are critical, and vital to the economic future of the county.

"We are growing, and so is the entire region,” Ammann said. “Our freeways and highways are thoroughfares to two of the world’s largest centers, Sacramento and the Bay Area. We all must collaborate and work toward public awareness and acceptance that our transportation needs must be served.”

“With the recent economic crisis and state budget cuts to transportation,” said Supervisor Spering, “it is imperative that we in Solano County discover even more innovative ways to deliver travel safety and mobility.”

The event is sponsored by Congresswoman Ellen O. Tauscher, and CSI Career College.

The event will be held at 7:30 a.m. at the Courtyard by Marriott, 1350 Holiday Lane, Fairfield. Cost is $25 for Solano EDC members and $35 for non-members. For information call 707 864-1855.

The monthly breakfast series is underwritten by the EDC circle members: Touro University, Solano Garbage Company and Potrero Hills Landfill.
